Events planned throughout Memorial Day weekend

MANISTEE – While many last year’s Memorial Day weekend events were canceled, this year’s holiday weekend will have a lot to do with people going out, remembering our deceased veterans and even to have a little fun.

Here are some of the activities happening in Manistee and Benzie counties this Memorial Day weekend.

Friday May 28

6 p.m. – Portage Lake Association Murder Mystery Fundraiser, Portage Point Resort, 8567 Portage Point Drive, Onekama

Saturday May 29

9 a.m. to noon – Manistee Farmers Market begins 20th season, Veterans Memorial Park parking lot

11:00 a.m. – Benzie Area Historical Society annual commemoration ceremony and lilac laying followed by a short program on the 1918 pandemic and a gravestone maintenance training program focused on the resting places of veterans of the civil war, the monument of the Grand Army of the Republic, the canton of Benzonia Cemetery

1 p.m. to 5 p.m. – Marilla Museum & Pioneer Place cemetery promenade, Marilla Township Cemetery


4 p.m. – Mosaic unveiling, Centennial Walkway Park, Kaleva

Sunday May 30

5:00 p.m. – Drivers’ Blessing, Manistee County Fairground, Onekama

Monday May 31

8 a.m. – American Legion Flag Raising, Legion Post 531, Copemish

8:15 a.m. – American Legion Memorial Service, Nessen Town Cemetery

8:30 a.m. – American Legion Memorial Service, Nessen City Catholic Cemetery

8:45 a.m. – American Legion Memorial Service, Grant Township Cemetery, Buckley

9 a.m. – American Legion Memorial Service, Cornell Cemetery, Buckley

9:30 a.m. – American Legion Memorial Service, Minar Cemetery, Mesick

9:45 a.m. – American Legion Memorial Service, Marilla Township Cemetery

10 a.m. – United Veterans Council of Manistee County Memorial Ceremonies with Prayer, Poppy Placement, Rifle Salute and Taps, Trinity Cemetery in Filer Township, followed by another at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee

11 a.m. – American Legion Memorial Service, Springdale Township Cemetery

11:30 a.m. – American Legion Memorial Service, Pleasanton Township Cemetery

Noon – American Legion Memorial Service, Thompsonville Cemetery

12:30 p.m. – American Legion Memorial Service, Cleon Township Cemetery, Faylor Road

1 p.m. – American Legion Memorial Service, Cleon Township Cemetery, Rice Road

1 p.m. – Memorial ceremony, Benzie County Veterans Memorial, Benzonia
