Federal Department of Veterans Affairs proposes closing Brooklyn VA Medical
Assemblyman William Colton (D – Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Dyker Heights) said the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs issued a proposal on Monday March 14.and2022 to close two of the VA hospitals in New York.
“After the clear report that Brooklyn VA, known as the Brooklyn Campus of the NY Harbor Healthcare System, and the Manhattan VA Hospital Campus at 423 East 23rd Street will close and merge its services into other facilities as dozens of veterans have rallied to demand that health care facilities be saved. Our veterans put their lives and health on the line to keep America free and great and we owe them a debt of gratitude for providing for their health care needs,” Colton said.
“Trying to save money by forcing our veterans, many of whom are elderly, to walk long distances must not be allowed. Closing the Brooklyn or Manhattan VA hospitals would impose an undeserved burden and serious harm on the thousands of veterans who live in or near both areas and depend on these facilities as their primary source of health care. Our veterans deserve better. Therefore, I call on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to reject any plans to merge, cut health services, or close VA hospitals in New York,” Colton asks.
