Among the flurry of 140 graces and commutations issued by former President Trump on his last day in office was Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez, a former government informant whose links to Jay-Z raise questions.

According to New York Daily News in March 2015, after Perez was arrested in 1994 for possession of 35 kilos of cocaine, she struck a deal with the federal government, agreeing to wear hidden threads to record her encounters with the main cocaine traffickers. Having become a government informant, she helped the Drug Enforcement Administration put an end to major drug trafficking in Puerto Rico and Colombia.

The New York Daily News also reported in May 2014 that, according to federal court transcripts he obtained, Perez was wearing cables to meet with major cocaine traffickers.

Perez was the wife of longtime Jay-Z winger Juan Perez, who now heads Roc Nation Sports.

In 1994, the Perez family was arrested in a major drug investigation in South Florida. That year, 19 people, including Desiree Perez, were indicted in a federal drug investigation.

The sentinel of the sun reported in 1994 that the attack was the result of a four-year covert investigation that prosecutors said ended a large family of South Florida drug traffickers living in Miramar.

According to the indictment, the family, led by Miami seafood distributor Luis Miguel Perez, smuggled cocaine into South Florida for 10 years in the amount of 35 to 50 tons.

According to a White House statement, Perez has been pardoned for her involvement in a conspiracy to distribute narcotics. The conviction was over 25 years old, Billboard reported.

“Since her conviction, Ms. Perez has taken full responsibility for her actions and changed her life,” the White House said in a statement. “She has been in paid employment and has championed criminal justice reform in her community.”

In a statement provided to Billboard, Perez said, “I am grateful that I received a pardon and officially closed this chapter of my life in the eyes of the law. I have taken full responsibility for my mistakes 25 years ago, but I am also extremely proud of my personal growth, persistence and accomplishments since then.

“This forgiveness reinforces my lifelong commitment to advocating for criminal justice reform and social justice initiatives,” said Perez.

The news of Perez’s pardon has raised questions on social media. Legendary hip-hop DJ and radio host Funkmaster tweeted he wanted answers and promised to discuss them on his show, SOHH reported. “Congratulations to JayZ and the CEO of Roc Nation for the forgiveness of Donald Trump! … I MUST GET MY FACTS IN ORDER BEFORE DISCUSSING IT! I NEVER NEW THIS UNTIL TODAY ???? WHAT IS EVERYBODY THINKING ABOUT THIS? “

In 2015, Jay-Z Roc-A-Fella’s former partner Damon Dash said he was suspicious of Perez after learning she had become a government informant after her arrest. Dash said he was hesitant to do business with Jay-Z due to the connection with Desiree and Juan Perez.

In a March 4, 2015, interview on Sway Calloway’s SiriusXM radio show, Dash said he needed to have a “one-on-one” with Jay-Z about Desiree Perez being an informant. Dash said the federal government had targeted him “for years” and had arrested some of his colleagues, including Kareem “Biggs” Burke, who founded Roc-A-Fella with Dash and Jay Z in 1995. Biggs was convicted in 2012 at five years. in jail for conspiring to distribute over 100 kilograms of marijuana.

Desiree Perez has risen through the ranks in the entertainment world, from part-time nightclub manager to record label manager. In 2008, when Jay-Z started Roc Nation as a joint venture with Live Nation, he hired her as the company’s chief operating officer, Billboard reported. In 2019, she was promoted to the CEO the company.

Desiree Perez worked with Meek Mill for the reform of criminal justice on the Reform Alliance initiative.
