George Rice, US Army veteran turned local brewery owner

Across the Rio Grande Valley, community members are making a difference every day.

Here at CBS 4, we shine a light on the people in our community who pay it forward.

George Rice, a US Army veteran, has made it his mission to give back to the city that gave him so much growing up.

Rice served in the US Army from 2001 to 2010 after graduating from CISD Mission and Texas A&M University in Kingsville.

“I joined just after 9/11. I was playing college football and was ready to fight for my country, so I joined the US Army as an infantryman and deployed a lot, Rice said.

After several tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, Rice returned to the Rio Grande Valley to begin his second dream of opening his own brewery.

“It’s been almost 4 years and I can’t believe it’s become this,” Rice said, “We try to give back as much as we can to our community, blue collar workers, hard workers, veterans fighters, law enforcement, educators, nurses, it’s that service mentality inherited from the military,” Rice said.

A military mindset is what shaped 5×5 Brewing Co. in Mission into the successful business it has become.

“All owners are veterans and the vast majority of our staff are veterans,” Rice said, “We are committed to helping and advancing the community.” said Rice.

In 2022, the brewery hosted several community events to benefit local schools, police departments, animal shelters, and veteran-based nonprofits.

“If you see someone around you who needs help, do something. Open the door. Kindness gives back,” Rice said, “We estimated we had 708,000 receipts for nonprofits in the Rio Grande Valley and state.

In remembrance of 9/11, 5×5 Brewing Co. held a Walk of Remembrance.

The brewery also held a 5K in honor of the Hidalgo County Sheriff‘s Association.

5×5 received national recognition for the National Outstanding Small Employer Award from American Legion Veterans at its 103rd Annual National Convention in Milwaukee.

The National Brewery Award reminds us to keep Rice and the 5×5 family serving the community.
