Payment card and mobile payment statistics – 2nd quarter 2022

MACAU, Aug. 8 – According to statistics released today by the Macau Monetary Authority, the total number of personal credit and debit cards issued by Macau banks increased in the second quarter of 2022. credit and debit cards both recorded quarter-on-quarter decreases. In contrast, the number and value of transactions from local mobile payment tools continued to increase on a quarterly basis.

Payment cards issued

The total number of personal credit cards issued by banks in Macau stood at 1,662,136 at the end of June 2022, an increase of 3.5% from the previous quarter. The total number of debit cards issued by banks in Macau reached 2,021,381, up 1.9% from last quarter.

Credit limit granted and payment default

At the end of June 2022, the credit card credit limit granted by banks in Macau reached MOP 47.8 billion, up 1.7% compared to the end of March 2022. Credit card receivables increased amounted to MOP 2.3 billion, of which the rollover amounted to MOP 843.1 million. , representing 36.5% of credit card receivables. The delinquency rate, i.e. the ratio between amounts overdue for more than three months and credit card receivables, increased by 0.4 percentage points to 2.9% compared to the end March 2022.

Turnover and reimbursement

For the second quarter of 2022, credit card revenue totaled MOP 5.1 billion, down 7.6% quarter-on-quarter. Cash advance revenue was MOP 139.3 million, or 2.8% of total credit card revenue. The number of credit card transactions reached 8.4 million, down 3.9% from the previous quarter. Credit card repayments, in which interest and fee payments are included, fell 6.5% from the previous quarter to MOP 5.4 billion. Meanwhile, the number of debit card transactions other than cash withdrawals fell 16.4% from the previous quarter to 347,700. Debit card revenue fell 22, 1% compared to the previous quarter to stand at 694.9 million MOP.

The number of transactions made by local mobile payment tools increased by 7.6% compared to the previous quarter to reach 68.6 million in the second quarter of 2022. The value of transactions reached MOP 6.4 billion, up by 7.6% compared to the first quarter of 2022. The average amount per transaction was 92.9 MOP. At the end of June 2022, the number of mobile payment terminals and QR code signs stood at 93.2 thousand, up 0.7% from one quarter to the next.
