The Richmond Observer – Richmond County veterans to be honored with several events


ROCKINGHAM – Several events are planned in Richmond County in the coming days to honor local veterans.

The Richmond County Hospice will kick off the weekend with its 10th annual Salute to Veterans event on Friday, November 5th.

The celebration will include a performance by the 82nd Airborne Division Band from Fort Bragg and a team jump parachute demonstration.

Hospice posted pictures on its Facebook page on Wednesday of cadets from the Richmond Upper Secondary School Army JROTC unit setting up the tent ahead of the event.

Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. with the program starting at 11 a.m. The event is free and open to “all patriotic citizens”, and will also include a lunch.

On Saturday, three local veterans organizations – American Legion Post 147, VFW Post 4203 and AMVETS Post 316 – will hold their annual celebration ceremony at the Richmond County Veterans Memorial Park.

The ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m., will include a wreath presentation and a speech by retired Maj. Darryl A. Kelly, who is the JROTC Army Instructor at Richmond Senior. Charity Davis is scheduled to sing the national anthem and Cameron McDonald is about to play Taps.

The event ends with a free lunch at VFW.

The day’s festivities then move to Rockingham town center for the annual Veterans Day Parade, hosted by Auxiliary VFW Post 4203.

Award-winning regional group Mark McKinney and Co. will perform in Harrington Square and the Raeford-based All Veteran Group Jump team will set up a meetup before heading to the BB&T bank parking lot before the parade begins. .

On Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11, the town of Dobbins Heights will be holding its annual service at the community center, starting at 9 a.m.
